A Little Oasis in Chernihiv, Ukraine

(Enjoy the photographs below after reading!)

There are some places that are beautiful simply because of what they are. And then there are places that become beautiful because of the love, time, patience, and care someone has poured into them over the years. This little corner of Chernihiv, Ukraine, is one of those places.

I’m currently in Chernihiv for my second visit to Ukraine, while my fiancée and I wait for approval to get married. Hopefully, that approval comes soon, because I’m more than ready to take the next step in this journey with her. I first visited Ukraine this past winter, in December and January, and at that time everything looked completely different. The trees were bare, the gardens were resting, and the landscape had that quiet, dormant feeling that winter brings. Even then, I could see the beauty of this place, but I had absolutely no idea what I was going to discover when I returned in the summer.

My soon-to-be in-laws have spent the past 30 years cultivating and caring for their property. Thirty years of planting, growing, pruning, nurturing, maintaining, and simply working the land. When you see it now, you begin to understand just how much can come from three decades of consistent love and hard work. The property is absolutely incredible. Fruit trees are everywhere, producing more than you could possibly eat. Flowers are blooming throughout the property, gardens are filled with life, and greenery seems to surround you from every direction.

But what makes this place so special isn't simply how much grows here. It's the feeling of the place. There are little areas everywhere where you can sit and relax, surrounded by trees and flowers. On a hot summer afternoon, you can find a shady spot, feel the breeze moving through the leaves, and listen to the birds singing. You can walk through the property and pick fruit directly from the trees. You can sit quietly and listen to the wind. Or you can simply do nothing at all.

You can escape. And that's probably the best way I can describe it. It's an oasis. Not one that was created overnight, but one that was patiently built over 30 years, one tree, one garden, and one season at a time.

Coming back here in the summer has also given me a completely different perspective on Ukraine. When I was here during the winter, I knew the property was beautiful, but winter only gave me a glimpse of what was waiting underneath. Now everything is alive. The trees are full, the gardens are growing, the flowers are blooming, and everything is green. There is something almost surreal about walking through a place that I previously saw in the quiet of winter and now experiencing it bursting with life.

As a photographer, I naturally notice things like that. I notice the way the light filters through the trees, the textures of the gardens, the colors of the flowers, and the way the landscape changes throughout the day. There are photographs everywhere I look. But even without a camera in my hand, this place is difficult not to appreciate. It makes you stop. It makes you slow down. And it makes you realize how much beauty can come from simply taking care of something for a very long time.

One of the things that has surprised me most about my time in Ukraine is just how comfortable it feels. I've now experienced both Eastern and Western Ukraine, and while there are certainly differences from one region to another, I continue to be struck by how familiar the country feels to me. The climate is familiar. The landscape is familiar. The countryside, forests, farmland, rivers, and open spaces remind me in many ways of home in America.

Of course, there are differences. There are different languages, traditions, architecture, food, history, and culture. But underneath all of that, there is something strangely familiar. Ukraine feels like home away from home.

Maybe that's part of why I have fallen in love with this country. Or maybe it's because my heart has become connected to someone who calls this place home. Either way, every time I come here, I find something new to appreciate.

It's easy to think of travel in terms of seeing famous places, visiting major cities, taking photographs, or checking destinations off a list. But I've come to realize that some of the most memorable parts of a trip aren't necessarily found on a map. Sometimes they're found sitting underneath a fruit tree. Sometimes they're found picking something fresh from a garden. Sometimes they're found listening to birds while a summer breeze moves through the trees. And sometimes they're found in the quiet realization that you're standing in the middle of something that someone spent 30 years creating.

That's what this property represents to me. It's more than a beautiful garden. It's a physical reminder of what patience, dedication, and love can produce.

Thirty years ago, these trees were smaller. The gardens were different. The property didn't look anything like it does today. But someone planted those trees anyway. Someone cared for them. Someone kept going. And now, decades later, their reward is all around them.

A beautiful, living, breathing little oasis in Chernihiv. And I feel incredibly fortunate that I get to experience it.
